Good Morning Britain

ITV’s new weekday breakfast programme ‘Good Morning Britain’ has launched today. Replacing ITV’s ailing predecessor ‘Daybreak’, ‘Good Morning Britain’ is the latest attempt by ITV to prise away that hotly contested Breakfast TV crown from their BBC rival.

Fronting the show is BBC Breakfast’s Susanna Reid, voted the UK’s most popular breakfast TV host ever in a recent newspaper poll. As well as a line-up of on-air talent that includes Charlotte Hawkins, former GMTV presenter Ben Shepherd, and sports presenter Sean Fletcher.

Early reviews of ‘Good Morning Britain’ have been largely positive, praising the newsier tone and set up – largely mimicking the style of its American namesake and NBC’s Today programme – all four presenters are sat on designer swivel chairs behind a large glass table rather than the traditional sofa format. Harsher critics have commented that the pace of the first show was dizzyingly fast with too much going on, added to by a few instances of shaky camera work. However if these teething issues can be smoothed over, as Daily Telegraph writer Michael Hogan claimed, “BBC Breakfast might just have a viable rival”.
