RAJAR update – 16th May 2013

The results show that 90.3% of the population tunes in to the radio every week, this is up by approximately 608,000 adults on the same quarter last year with listening to an average of 21.9 hours each. The total number of hours listened to radio is 1.03 Billion, which is marginally down, 3% Year on Year.
Digital radio continues to evolve with twenty-six million people, half the population of the UK are now tuning in via this format each week.
The latest figures show and digital radio listening hours now account for 34.3% of all radio listening, up 17% year on year. For the first time ever, DAB accounts for more than half of all listening to the Absolute Radio network. 20% of adults have listened to radio via their mobile phone, up 19% since this time last year.

BBC National

BBC Radio 1
New Radio 1 breakfast DJ Nick Grimshaw has lost nearly a million listeners since taking over from Chris Moyles, plunging to the flagship show to its lowest audience for a decade. Radio 1, which lost its title as the “nation’s favourite” to Radio 2 in 2001, was also beaten in the latest listening figures by Radio 4, only the second time this has happened since a new audience measurement system was introduced in 1999.

Grimshaw, who was given the breakfast slot in response to pressure to attract a younger audience, had 5.8 million listeners each week on average in the first three months of this year, according to the latest official Rajar audience figures published on Thursday.
The 28-year-old presenter, who took over from Moyles last September, shipped 900,000 listeners compared to the final three months of 2012 and was nearly a million down on Moyles’ last quarterly audience of 6.7 million.

It is the lowest audience for the Radio 1 breakfast show since it was presented by Sara Cox in 2003. Cox had 5.5 million listeners in her last three months in the job before she was replaced by Moyles, who fashioned himself as the “saviour of Radio 1”.

A Radio 1 spokesman said: “When you put in a new schedule and target new listeners it takes time to build a new audience, both for Grimmy and the entire station.
“Ben [Cooper] has got a two-year plan for the station and this is the second quarter of it. It is the biggest set of changes to the station in a generation. We were expecting this kind of situation. Even though the audience is slightly smaller our focus is on the younger demographic.”
Under pressure from the corporation’s commercial rivals and the BBC Trust to reach a younger audience, Cooper has brought in new presenting talent to Radio 1, including chart show host Jameela Jamil and dropped older DJs such as Judge Jules and Vernon Kay. He also moved Greg James to drivetime, with Scott Mills moving to an early afternoon slot.

BBC Radio 2
Chris Evans and BBC Radio 2 have both recorded their highest ever audience figures, with the station now reaching over 15 million listeners.

Radio 2 continues to be boosted by the Evans effect, posting a record 15.3 million listeners, its biggest ever audience share of 17.7%, as Radio 1 suffers and stutters with Nick Grimshaw.

BBC Radio 3
Radio 3 over all was up, 13.7% year on year, increasing to 2.2 million with the Breakfast Show posting a strong increase to 704,000 weekly listeners, from 576,000 last year and 606,000 in the last quarter.

BBC Radio 4
Now has a weekly reach of 10.76 million from 10.31 million last year whilst the Today programme gets a weekly reach of 6.94 million, up from 6.66 million last year but down slightly on the quarter from 7.05 million.

BBC Radio 4 Extra
BBC’s second most popular digital offering, Radio 4 Extra posted 1.6 million listeners a week

BBC Radio 5Live
Radio 5 Live, crowned station of the year at the Sony Radio Academy awards earlier this week, was broadly flat, on 6.29 million down from 6.36 million last year but up on the quarter from 6.12 million. Share was down slightly to 4% from 4.4% last year and 4.3% last quarter.

BBC Asian Network

The BBC Asian Network has recently overhauled its output and the general consensus is that the changes seem to be connecting well with listeners. The station has revamped its music playlist too with prominence given to Bollywood. During this period, the station had partnered up with various UK concerts and events and got praise for its Red Button special programming from the BBC Asian Network archives.

The Network has added 101,000 new listeners this quarter, taking up its weekly reach to 554,000. Its listening hours stood at 5.8 hours – that’s one hour less compared to the previous quarter. This time last year, the station was in a similar position with 540,000 listeners – it has 14,000 new listeners compared to last year.

BBC 6 Music
6 Music slipped back on the previous quarter but was up nearly 25% year on year to 1.8 million

BBC World Service
The BBC’s World Service was down 11% on the previous quarter, to 1.3 million.

Helen Boaden, Director of BBC Radio, said: “Radio kicks off 2013 with a robust set of figures for the industry as a whole and I’m delighted that BBC Radio still attracts more than 35 million people every week. Radio 2 goes from strength to strength, setting new records across the board.
“The brand new schedule continues to bed in at Radio 1 and we remain confident that it will emerge strongly from a period of transition. Radio 1 is in good health – as clearly demonstrated by five golds at this week’s Sony Radio Academy Awards.”

BBC Regional

Audience figures for the BBC’s Welsh language service Radio Cymru have dropped to their lowest ever level. On average 119,000 people listened to BBC Radio Cymru each week, 3,000 fewer than the station’s previous record low.  The figures cover schedule changes at the station and a period when it was unable to play thousands of Welsh tunes due to a dispute over royalty payments.

Meanwhile, sister station BBC Radio Wales attracted 26,000 more listeners.

Sian Gwynedd, head of Welsh language programmes and services at BBC Cymru Wales, said: “These figures cover a period of unprecedented challenge, disruption and major schedule changes for the station.

“In that respect, the fall in the reach for Radio Cymru is disappointing but not wholly unexpected. The team has worked hard and with creativity over the last few months through some difficult times and I want to pay tribute to their resilience.”

At BBC local radio, overall reach in England came in at 7.1m, up on last quarter’s 6.9m but down compared to last year’s 7.6m. Interesting figures for Mark Forrest’s new networked evening show which has 1.60m listeners for the first three months of 2013, giving the network the highest reach and share in a year.

Market share, at 8.3%, has increased this quarter, compared to 7.5% last quarter but is down on last year’s 9% and the average hours listened per listener a week came in at 9.79 compared to 9.1 last quarter.

Notable figures in the regions with BBC Oxford gaining a 10% audience share and highest hours, and BBC Radio Cumbria enjoying 33% weekly reach for the first time since 2011.

BBC Radio Derby has taken a hit, with a drop from 29% reach to 22% year on year and total hours falling below 10million – half what it was a year ago.

David Holdsworth, Controller of BBC English Regions, said: “It’s been a tough year for BBC Local Radio in England but despite this figures for this quarter have increased. The challenge now is to continue this trend and achieve further growth in the long term.

“I believe we can succeed by continuing to provide quality local public service broadcasting much valued by our listeners.”

BBC Radio Scotland experienced only a little change, year-on-year and quarter-on-quarter. Year-on-year, its reach fell by 0.9 per cent, while the difference between the final quarter of last year and the first quarter of this year was a rise of 0.4 per cent.

In other words, an average 1,007,000 during the first quarter of last year, an average 994,000 during the final quarter of last year and an average 998,000 during the first three months of this year.

Wire FM, Wish FM, Tower FM, The Pulse and Radio Wave have all lost listeners whilst Juice Liverpool sees an increase since this time last year.

Have attracted 2.9 million listeners in the first quarter of 2013 – an increase of 18% quarter-on-quarter, and 6% year-on-year. Listening hours also increased by 5%, up to 19.2 million – 83% of the station’s audience (2.4 million) is male.

The station’s Programme Director, Liam Fisher, said: “The fact that people are listening longer to talkSPORT is testament to the work of our on-air and production teams who have made the station the home of live sport and breaking sports news”

Managing Director, Calum Macaulay, added: “We’re attracting a record number of ABC1 male listeners which is reflected in the advertisers who have signed or re-signed with talkSPORT in 2013 including Ford, Heinz, Sky, Renault and Microsoft.
“As exclusive broadcasters of the Lions tour to Australia, the first time the event has been on UK commercial radio, we’re also very likely to be attracting new listeners to the station over the next couple of months. As we proved by winning a Sony Gold award for Best Competition on Monday for our work with Coca-Cola we’re in a position to be offering brands exciting and innovative content to reach our listeners on talkSPORT.”

Absolute Radio
Absolute Radio had 1.7 million listeners, down nearly 5% on the previous quarter, but up an identical amount year on year. Its most popular digital spin-off station.
Absolute 80s, was up nearly 15% year on year to 984,000. Across the total network, overall listening hours reach a record level at over 25m.

Bauer Radio
Some cheer for Magic London, coming in top of the share chart with 5.6%, followed by LBC (4.6%), Capital (4.2%), Heart (4.2%), Kiss (3.9%),
(Most of the Magic AM stations are also down year on year – with just Leeds and Sheffield showing any signs of growth)

Other Bauer:
TFM Radio’s last results with local programmes saw the station lose listeners – from 202,000 to 169,000 year on year.

Metro Radio, CFM, Radio Aire and Viking FM are up whilst City Talk, Radio City, Key 103, Rock FM and Hallam FM are down in listeners since this time last year.

Bauer Scotland:
Clyde 1 & Clyde 2
Clyde 1 has added 84,000 listeners in the last year
Forth One & Forth 2
Forth One adds over a million listening hours since this time three months ago, recording a 10-year high for the station

Graham Bryce, Managing Director of Bauer Media Scotland: “Once more we are proud to stand out as the number one radio broadcaster in Scotland with the most listened to stations in every market.”

Global Radio
Capital FM
95.8 Capital FM, despite losing listeners this quarter, is back on top as the most listened to commercial radio station in London. The latest figures show the station on top with just under two million listeners followed by Magic, Heart then Kiss. Staying in 5th place is LBC 97.3.
Capital Manchester is also up. Capital Yorkshire has reached a new high with 1.128m listeners and Capital North East has hit the half-a-million mark.

It’s been a good year for Xfm Manchester, adding 53,000 listeners year on year

Classic FM
Classic FM’s weekly average of 5.6 million listeners is up 4% on the previous quarter

GMG Radio
Real Radio
Not a good day in the Real Radio (Scotland) studio, which now has 472,000 listeners today compared with 650,000 a year ago. The station peaked at over 800,000 in 2007 but has been on a downward trend since.
In the north of England, it’s Real Radio which again takes the headlines with Real North West, Real Yorkshire and Real North East all losing listeners. In the North West, Real has dropped to 361,000 – and at 7% weekly reach is less than the first figures published for the station in 1999 (as Century 105). However, some success with smaller sister station Real Radio XS as it continues to grow with an extra 48,000 listeners this year taking it to 170,000.

Celador Radio
The Breeze
The groups two largest Breeze stations have posted their best ever listening figures. In the first quarter of 2013, The Breeze South covering Southampton, Portsmouth, Winchester, Newbury and Andover has doubled in audience over the past 12 months and now has a 7% weekly reach.

In the South West, The Breeze for Bristol, Bath and Frome & West Wiltshire has more than doubled its audience in the year, and seen a more than fourfold increase in listening hours to over half a million.

Elsewhere in the group Jack Bristol saw its highest audience yet, with 125,000 listeners tuning in each week.

Dee 106.3, Silk 106.9, Revolution Radio all on the up, with The Bee seeing a significant increase year on year
